Outcomes
The Need
The North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (NWIEP) provides northwest local authorities with a major body of support to enable them to broaden their improvement and efficiency horizons and benefit their communities. As part of providing this support, NWIEP wanted to help local authorities in the northwest to collaboratively develop approaches to sustainable procurement.
The Response
FSquared has developed a strong approach to supporting public sector organisations to embed sustainable procurement principles in day-to-day practice, ensuring that the maximum impact is achieved for their communities. For NWIEP, we used this experience to design and deliver workshops on sustainable procurement and sustainable commissioning for individuals from local authorities across the Northwest.

Our approach to these workshops is informed by workshops that we have facilitated elsewhere and is led by a team of experienced facilitators, action learning and creativity sessions. Both of our NWIEP workshops adopted a structure based on:
- Information – ensuring that all participants are provided with information about latest thinking and good practice provides a good foundation for workshop discussions
- Inspiration – our interactive sessions ensure that active learning takes place leading to participants being motivated and inspired by our workshops
- Application – our workshops make sure that ideas are developed and action planned so that participants understand how they can implement ideas through their working practice
The first workshop focused on an overview of sustainability and sustainable procurement. The second workshop focused on sustainable commissioning. Both workshops were successful in facilitating engagement and participation and led to the generation of good ideas which were then action planned.
The Benefits
There are several benefits to be gained by getting procurement professionals together in facilitated workshops such as these. For example the workshops enabled:
- Good practice to be shared amongst participants
- Time out from day to day pressure which offered the opportunity to think creatively and collaboratively
- Participants to address challenges and apply solutions to specific issues
Overall, the workshops enabled strong, region-wide approaches to sustainable procurement to be discussed, developed and action planned.
