FSquared worked with Barratt at bid stage to develop sustainability and community benefit proposals for a new urban village in the Shard End area of Birmingham. The project includes housing, retail and community facilities, comprising: • 240 houses and flats • a new Library, Housing and Neighbourhood Offices • a family pub and retail units • a new Vicarage and refurbished Church Hall We worked with the Barratt team, mapped local community facilities and consulted local stakeholders, developing proposals to maximise community benefit through: • Community and stakeholder engagement • Employment and training • Support for local businesses • Community facilities, including redevelopment of the existing Church Hall as a flexible community space incorporating a community café |

Outcomes
FSquared developed proposals for the existing Church Hall – at the centre of the Urban Village – to become a lively and well-used asset to the community. These proposals include:
• Using the Church Hall as a flexible community space to accommodate community activities throughout the development process
• Establishing a Community Café to offer services such as luncheon clubs and catering classes
• Developing a social enterprise to manage the Community Café, with clear objectives around volunteering, local training & healthy living objectives
• Extending the remit of the social enterprise to take ownership of bookings for open space uses (e.g. markets, craft fairs), and develop a community gardening project
The proposals will be taken forward through establishment of a working group which will undertake a feasibility study to explore the options.
